Success stories from schools in Ireland

Post-primary schools in Ireland use MyFutureChoice programmes to help students choose Leaving Certificate subjects, CAO courses and careers. On this page, guidance counsellors and schools say what they think of EirQuest and MyAptitude, in their own words.

How schools use EirQuest and MyAptitude

EirQuest is an interest questionnaire for students aged 14 to 17. It shows the career and academic areas a student is most interested in, along with the careers linked to them. Schools use it in Transition Year or 3rd Year as a basis for Leaving Cert subject choice, often together with MyAptitude, a set of aptitude tests that shows a student’s academic strengths. Every student gets a personal report they can talk through with their guidance counsellor and at home.

From schools

“We have been using EirQuest & MyAptitude (formerly Cambridge Profile) for a number of years now, and get back very positive feedback. Particularly from parents who are able to discuss the report at home with their son/daughter and find it is a great help for choosing subject and career choices.”

Tony O’Gara, Sligo Grammar School

From guidance counsellors

“In my own practice as a guidance counsellor, for example, I administered “Eirquest” tests which incorporate interest and aptitude, and indicated the subjects that aligned with each student’s highest interest areas.”

Brian Mooney, Fellow and former President of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, The Irish Times, 5 March 2024

“I have successfully used a combination of interest questionnaire Eirquest, in conjunction with an aptitude test Cambridge Profile [now MyAptitude] … which has proved very successful in helping my students select Leaving Cert subjects which will match their appropriate career strengths.”

Brian Mooney, The Irish Times, 4 September 2017
