Why careers posters help young people
Careers posters keep the world of work in view every day, not just in careers lessons. They show young people the range of career pathways open to them, how their curriculum subjects can lead to different careers, and the skills employers look for. For careers leaders, a well-placed poster is a simple way to start conversations about routes and options, and to inspire students who have not yet thought about their future.
How to use careers posters in school
- Display the education routes posters (Do You Know Your Levels?, Levelling Up, Post 16 Paths) where students make choices: tutor rooms, the library and the careers office.
- Use a poster as a lesson starter: ask students which route or career area surprises them, and why.
- Bring Post 16 Paths and Best Educational Path for You to Year 9 options and Year 11 post-16 events, so students and parents can see every route, including apprenticeships and T Levels.
- Give the career area sheets out as research tasks: students choose an area, check the key skills and research two careers from the list.
- Use The Careers Puzzle in one-to-one or small-group guidance to talk through interests, skills and goals.
- Share the Gatsby Benchmarks poster at a staff briefing, so every teacher understands their part in careers education.
Careers posters and the Gatsby Benchmarks
In England, the Gatsby Benchmarks set out what good careers guidance looks like. Posters do not meet a benchmark on their own, but they support the work: the Career Area Resource Pack gives students career and labour market information (Benchmark 2) and helps you meet different students’ interests (Benchmark 3), and subject lessons can use the posters to link learning to careers (Benchmark 4). Read our guide to the Gatsby Benchmarks.
Suggested posters by year group
- Years 7 to 9: Find Your Own Treasure and Levelling Up, to start students thinking about careers as a journey.
- Years 9 to 11: Do You Know Your Levels? and Post 16 Paths, ahead of options and post-16 choices.
- Sixth form and college: Popular Universities, Best Educational Path for You and the career area sheets, for university and apprenticeship decisions.
Some posters show routes, such as T Levels, that are offered in England only. Check the routes available in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland before using them with students there.
